YouTube has <\/span>announced<\/span><\/a> important changes that will be made when verifying a channel, that might cause a large number of creators to lose their verification status. So far, YouTube has allowed any channel with a minimum number of 100,000 subscribers to request to verify their channel,\u00a0 this requirement will be eliminated as of October 2019. Only accounts that can prove their authenticity can verify your YouTube channel<\/span><\/p>\n

This is in a new light that YouTube users take the verification badge as an endorsement of the content that shows a certain channel.\u00a0 A report by YouTube found that more than 30% of users believed that the checkmark indicates the approval of the content, not the identity of the channel itself. In addition, some creators have falsified their verification status. Previously, a verified channel showed the badge next to the name of the channel by means of musical notes or checkmark, something that can be easily added. In this scenario, it’s tough for YouTube creators who are not verified to get viewers to their content. This change will have a positive effect on YouTube creators who have less than 100,000 subscribers to bring the audience to their video.<\/span><\/p>\n

YouTube will focus its efforts on verifying channels that have a greater need to demonstrate their authenticity, such as those that belong to a brand, public figures, artists or creators that may be subject to impersonation<\/span><\/p>\n

Among these requirements is that the channel represents a \u201ccreator, artist, public figures or well-known or highly sought after company\u201d, in addition to considering whether the channel is widely recognized outside of YouTube and has a strong online presence, as well as whether it is a channel that has a name similar to other channels. <\/span>The system that YouTube will use to determine the verification of these types of accounts will integrate both human review and algorithmic methods.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beyond raising the threshold to verify an account on YouTube, the social network had several reasons after this change. YouTube wants to make clear that verification is not an endorsement of channel content. <\/span>This is a real problem for the platform that has had to face controversies around the racist, dangerous, conspiracy and extremist content that has spread on the social network. YouTube wants to take the distance in terms of its responsibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

YouTube will modify the appearance of its badges, and instead of the tick on a gray background, now the same channel name will be highlighted in gray, regardless of the type of account in question, that is, the social network will no longer show different badges. For example, musicians who showed a musical note will now have the same verification as the rest of the creators.<\/span><\/p>\n

YouTube said in its statement, that the verification system that it has maintained so far, was established when the site was smaller, however, its ecosystem has grown and has \u201cbecome more complex\u201d. The system of verifying a channel through the number of subscribers will no longer be allowed since fake bots or followers tend to alter this metric. Now, the new system will have more stringent requirements, which manage to define “prominence,” <\/span>With these changes in the verification of YouTube channels, platform users are clarified that this is not an endorsement of the content they show, but of the originality of the channel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
