Very soon you can find interactive content on YouTube. The social network of videos is exploring a new format of storytelling in which users can choose their own adventure, which hopes to boost engagement among viewers, and of course, increase users on the platform.

A few months ago Netflix introduced to the world Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, a new interactive video format in which viewers can choose the plot when making certain decisions in the storyline. After its success, the world’s most popular video platform does not want to be left behind and has created a new unit responsible for developing interactive content on YouTube.

For years, content creators have tried to tell stories that allow viewers to choose different outcome lines, something that current technology has made possible, attracting large investors from major media companies in the world. Interactive content on YouTube comes after the rage caused by this format. Netflix has just launched this week its second interactive project with which viewers can choose their own adventure: the Bear Grylls survival series, You vs. Wild while working on future interactive projects that could include romantic stories and comedies.

In addition, Walmart has invested 250 million dollars (220 million euros) in an agreement with Eko to create interactive content, but this time aimed at toy catalogs and interactive cooking programs. Previously, YouTube has experimented with interactive ads, but programming that includes multiple stories requires a much larger investment in order to ensure that storyline options are loaded smoothly.

In the near future, YouTube will make this option open to content creators where one can create multiple storylines for their video content with various plot options. This is a great time for content creators to plan early if they want to be the first ones to explore interactive storytelling when it opens to the public. Interactive YouTube videos will be a different way to consume videos on the platform. While probably ignored by many, it actually presents a lot of potential and may even become a common feature on YouTube.

To get ahead on this interactive storytelling trend, a few YouTube creators have started producing interactive stories in form of docuseries. They develop multiple plots to a storyline, upload the different videos plots and embed them as different end cards, giving the viewer a choice to select the plot they want to go with. This builds anticipation and keeps the viewer entertained, thereby making them click from one video to another.

The easiest view to growing your channel is to innovate the way you make videos and start engaging your audience with interactive videos that not only offer a connection but also more engagement. The novelty will eventually lead to more views on your video, and even new subscribers to your channel.
