How To Find The Right Keywords For Your YouTube Channel

Do you have all the keywords jotted down but aren’t sure what works best for your YouTube channel?  Finding the right keywords can be a daunting task. Some keywords may yield lucrative results but you may just be wasting your time with others. Here’s how you tap keywords the right way and ace your YouTube channel’s SEO ranking:

1. Incorporate long-tail keywords

Find long-tail keywords that have 2-4 words strung together. These words show more niche results and target people who are specifically looking for those keywords. For example, “blue skater skirts” is more narrow and targeted than just “skirts”. Though long-tail keywords have fewer search results, they closely match what people are looking for.

2. Find keywords with a moderate number of monthly searches (search volume)

If the search number is too high, it can get hard to compete for visibility and your YouTube channel may drown under the competition. Find keywords with at least 100-200 monthly searches and stay away from keywords with more than 100,000 monthly searches.

3. Don’t compete with major brands

Say if you’re a YouTube channel about fashion and your top competitors are brands like H&M or Forever 21, you’re unlikely to rank for the keywords they’re bidding against. However, if the top keywords aren’t dominated by the top dogs, you have a great chance of ranking on page one.

4. Target keywords with high Cost Per Clicks (CPCs)

If you find keywords with a low search volume that have very high CPCs, pounce on them. These keywords will convert higher. However, it’s hard to compete for keywords that have high CPCs. Once your channel gains better traction, you can vouch for these babies.

5. Prioritise keywords that already rank high on your YouTube channel

Use a Google Chrome extension tool like Keywords Everywhere to find out if your own keywords are generating the right traffic. If people are typing in your keywords and not clicking on your channel, you need to tweak your keyword or get rid of it altogether.

6. Compare keywords with your competitors

Head over to SEMrush or Keyword Tool Pro and drop your rival YouTube channel’s homepage URL into the keyword search box. Your competitor’s most used keywords will pop up in the results. Utilize the top keywords from around 5-10 competitors and scatter them in your content.

And that’s how you analyse the best keywords for your YouTube channel. It’s important to keep an eye on how well the keywords perform on your channel and make alterations accordingly. Once you get the formula right, you’ll have views pouring in like it’s the monsoon.
