It’s so cost-effective and simple to use natural lighting that’s easily available around your house to shoot videos. Windows are a great way to capture light and create a beautiful effect on your videos. Here are four main ways you can use window lighting to shoot videos.

1. Face towards the window

Stand in front of the window with your head facing towards the light. Place your camera right in front of the window, maybe even on the window sill. Don’t go too close to the window as the light may be too harsh. The further away you move from the window, the softer the light will be. A good rule of thumb is to keep 1 foot-5 feet away from the window depending on how bright it is.

2. Face towards the window’s side

Stand towards the side of your window and let the light fall on one side of your face. This adds dimension to your face. If you want to fill in the shadows on the other side of your face, just hold a reflector on the opposite side of the window so that the light can bounce evenly. You can buy a reflector on Amazon or just hold a white blanket.

3. Face against the light

Now if you want to create a silhouette for a dramatic video or music video, just stand with your back against the window and point your camera lens towards the window. Decrease the brightness on your camera until your silhouette is dark enough. Hold different objects or play around with different poses for a more creative effect.

4. Mirror lighting

Place plenty of mirrors, especially at an angle to your window to amplify the light in the room. The extra light will make your room look more spacious and your video more bright and natural. Play around with the mirrors and angles until you get the lighting right.

There are plenty of ways you can creatively use window lighting to shoot videos. Just keep experimenting and stick with what works best!
